Jan Mulder, Euro-parliamentarian for the Dutch liberal party (VVD), and fourth on the list of candidates, will give a speech during the official opening of the Dutch Mushroom Days on Wednesday 10 June 2009.
The European Commission has been informed by food business operators that dried wild mushrooms may contain levels of nicotine higher than 0,01 mg/kg on a fresh weight basis. According to EFSA, the European Food Safety Authority, the amount of nicotine was above the default maximum residue level (MRL) in 99% of cases. No clear reason has thus far been established for this unexpected presence of nicotine in dried mushrooms.
Thursday 24 April 2008 saw the second edition of the - exclusively Dutch - Nationale Paddestoelendag (National Mushroom Day), this time in the new research facilities of PRI in Wageningen. Some 350 growers and other interested parties could use the occasion to discover the latest techniques offered by various suppliers, attend lectures and do some networking.
Hundreds of down and outs at Miriam’s kitchen in Washington DC saw their luck change briefly on Thursday when they spotted First Lady Michelle Obama dishing out mushroom risotto during a surprise visit. For about 15 minutes, Obama scooped steaming hot mushroom food onto plates for 50 men and women inside Miriam's Kitchen, a privately funded organisation in a Presbyterian church, which has helped the homeless for 26 years.
The organisation of the Dutch Mushroom Days 2009 confirms the participation of 46 mushroom industry suppliers and organisations at the fair coming June. More then 10 Dutch and international companies are still considering participation at this moment (March 10).
