Flies and gnats

At this time of year there is a high incidence of flies sciarids or bubble infections A frequent problem for growers This means extra work and effort scrupulously cleaning the growing facility and a number of weeks of targeted fly prevention Dont forget to include important adjacent areas in your plan of attack spaces like attics or other rooms which may house flies If the growing rooms are not well sealed take steps Pay particular attention to cracks in the walls and all openings near doors filters and climate units Trying to solve a fly problem in growing rooms that arent properly sealed is a waste of time and effort

To choose the correct method for pest control first decide whether you are dealing with phorids or sciarids The differences are summarized below;

Phorid or mushroom flies are tiny (2 to 3 mm) brownish black hump-backed insects with short inconspicuous antennae The flies are not active at temperatures lower than 12° C These flies are highly active close to any light sources They have a typical jumpy zigzag-walking pattern

Sciarids or fungus gnats are 2 to 5 mm in size and black They have long erect antennae

If flies have been detected on the mushroom farm a rapidly working agent should be used immediately after filling such as Decis This should be used to treat the entire room The long working contact insecticide Malathion can also be used if needed If sciarids have been found use an agent such as Dimilin

Also make sure that all vegetation around the farm is keep clean and trimmed during the summer and autumn months
